Daily Cardinal staffers visit Journal Sentinel newsroom for training sessions

Daily Cardinal alum Jen Steele, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel business editor, works with Cardinal staffers Lauren Souza, Robyn Cawley, Dana Brandt and Jenna Walters.

Four staff members of The Daily Cardinal — Arts Editor Lauren Souza, incoming Editor-in-Chief Robyn Cawley, incoming College News Editor Dana Brandt and outgoing Campus News Editor Jenna Walters — spent April 26 in the newsroom of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel undergoing a full day of journalism training. This was the second consecutive year and fourth overall that Cardinal staffers have spent a day of training in the Journal Sentinel newsroom.

Thanks to:

  • Journal Sentinel journalists Craig Nickels, JR Radcliffe, Berford Gammon, Erin Caughey, Chelsey Lewis, Jen Steele, Debi Eimer, Bill Glauber and Rory Linanne for spending time teaching the staffers;

  • Journal Sentinel Editor George Stanley for allowing the daylong training; and

  • DCAA Board member (and Journal Sentinel Business Editor) Jim Nelson for setting up the training day.

The full day of learning followed 10 training sessions held by volunteer trainers during the 2018-19 school year and sponsored by the DCAA to keep the Cardinal staff trained and up to date on the latest journalism tools. Training will resume in September for the 2019-20 school year.

Cardinal alum Chelsey Lewis explains how she covers the travel beat for the Journal Sentinel.

During the session:

  • Nickels, an online analyst, talked about the difference between page views and content views and how they may be used to measure web page activity.

  • Radcliffe, a sports reporter and social media guru, showed some tricks he does to boost his online presence.

  • Gammon, Journal Sentinel director of photography, provided tips on taking photos with a smartphone and how to judge photos while editing.

  • Caughey, an online content and coding expert, coached Cardinal staffers on the various apps and mostly free programs that allow her to code, design pages and download databases into readable graphics.

  • Lewis, a Journal Sentinel feature writer and travel writer and a former Cardinal staffer, led a discussion on how travel content is all local and gave guidelines on when and where to shoot video. She also conducted a demonstration with Cardinal alum Jim Nelson on how to fly a drone and the rules that govern it.

  • Steele, Journal Sentinel Deputy Business Editor and a Cardinal alum, stressed the importance of accountability and making sure the top editors at the Cardinal read every story before it is published.

  • Eimer, the Journal Sentinel's Community News Editor, discussed the importance of neighborhood news.

  • Glauber, a veteran reporter, talked about covering politics and how to give each side a fair shake.

  • Linnane, a Journal Sentinel reporter, former Cardinal staffer and 2013 University of Wisconsin-Madison grad, led a discussion on solutions journalism.
