ABOUT US

The Daily Cardinal Alumni Association was founded in 1998 by Cardinal alumnus Anthony T. Sansone following the paper’s 1995 shutdown. Its intent was to involve the paper’s large, committed alumni base in supporting the Cardinal’s continuing operations.

Since then, we have held events across the country honoring notable Cardinal alumni and celebrating the paper’s achievements. We have funded three scholarships for Cardinal editors and provided grants to purchase equipment and travel to cover sports and news events. We have forged partnerships with other UW alumni groups through the Wisconsin Alumni Association and UW Foundation, and advocated for the Cardinal and student journalists at university, city, state and national levels.

In 2018, we began providing direct support to the Cardinal for general operations, seeing that the Cardinal’s long-time nonprofit status was becoming a more common funding model for news organizations. Today, the DCAA provides $30,000 in annual support in addition to funding for special projects and initiatives.

Our goal is to provide the Cardinal with sufficient support to allow its student staff and governing board the freedom to pursue that continuous and fearless sifting and winnowing that has long been its hallmark.
