WHY SUPPORT THE CARDINAL?

The economics of the news business and the public university have changed radically in the past 40 years. Print advertising has collapsed and digital ads pay a fraction of what print once did. The university no longer advertises in student publications and local businesses cater more to town than to gown.

The Daily Cardinal has been a nonprofit since its founding in 1892, and throughout its history has always depended on the extraordinary efforts of those who care about it to preserve its independence. By funding the Cardinal, you are ensuring that the qualities of the organization you care about — its fearless sifting and winnowing — endure.

WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO?

Ninety percent of all monies raised go directly to support the daily operations of the Cardinal. Printing, digital publishing and newsgathering all incur annual costs, and the Cardinal’s alumni support makes up a significant portion of the paper’s $100,000 annual budget.

In the past 15 years, the Daily Cardinal Alumni Association has raised more than $150,000 for the Cardinal, including scholarships for editors, internship stipends for advertising staff, travel and costs for special news projects and attendance at national student media conferences, as well as direct assistance.
