Tracking recent events

It is an exciting time to be a student journalist at UW-Madison.

The university is winding down celebrations of its sesquicentennial and looking ahead to the next century, the battle over student fees reached the Supreme Court in November, and Ron Dayne and the Badger football team have made a historic run to a Rose Bowl repeat appearance.

The Daily Cardinal is leading the way on coverage of these events, and The Daily Cardinal Archive Project has continued to chronicle this Cardinal history as it happens and preserve the stories of days gone by.

Over the past few months, the project received several important donations:

Daily Cardinal alumnus and UW-Madison School of Journalism Emeritus Professor Robert Taylor donated dozens of files from his many years on the Cardinal board. Included in the donation were many board minutes and financial reports of which the project previously had no copies, as well as countless news clippings and related materials that will make valuable additions to the project files.

On the financial side, the project received an extremely generous $1,000 donation from UW alumnus Derald Ruttenberg of New York in thanks for locating and sending photocopies of several Cardinal articles from his time in Madison. Mr. Ruttenberg's donation will be put to good use in future endeavors of the project.

Those endeavors may include an index of people, places and events covered in Cardinal back issues, which will be a large project but enormously valuable for research by Cardinal staff and the university community.

As always, The Daily Cardinal Archive Project seeks donations of past issues, correspondence, photographs and any other materials relating to the Cardinal, as well as personal stories and recollections of Cardinal alumni. Thank you to all who have donated, and everyone involved with the project hopes to hear from more of you in the future.

Donations of memorabilia may be sent to The Daily Cardinal Archive Project, 2142 Vilas Communication Hall, 821 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53706. To make a financial gift please follow instructions on page 7 of this newsletter and including a note that the donation is for the Archive Project.
