The Management Seminar for News Editors (MSCNE)

ALISON BAUTER, News Editor and DCAA scholarship winner

MSCNE, located in 15-degrees-cooler-than-Madison Athens, Ga., was an opportunity to step outside my hectic, three-job summer routine and reflect on the year ahead. Everyone from Poynter experts to fellow students with stories to share packed our week, keeping the 60 conference participants in the classroom six and seven hours a day. Trips to the University of Georgia's Red and Black newsroom and CNN's Atlanta base filled the time not spent in lecture halls. But perhaps just as valuable was the space outside the itinerary spent talking with fellow editors. Their passion for news and student journalism mirrored my own, and many their papers faced similar challenges to the Cardinal's, ensuring there was constantly invigorating (albeit deeply nerdy) discussion. Ultimately, I believe the conference not only fleshed out my goals as News Editor, but enhanced my personal perspective on the field of journalism and its direction. The trip was invaluable for the learning experience, and for the connections made with college editors across the country.
