Longtime Milwaukee Journal Editor, Cardinal Alum Dick Leonard Dies at 92

Former Daily Cardinal editor and a founding member of the DCAA Dick Leonard passed away from natural causes May 17 in Milwaukee. He was the sixth editor of the Milwaukee Journal, and served longer in his position than any other editor, with the exception of the paper's founder, L.W. Nieman.

Leonard earned his degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1947, when he returned to college after serving in World War II. While working at the Cardinal, he met his wife, Barbara. He was hired after graduation by the Journal, where he held a variety of roles before being named managing editor in 1962.

Throughout his career and into his retirement, Leonard was involved with numerous journalism organizations, including the DCAA. He was an assistant professor of communications at Marquette University, spent a decade on the Pulitzer Prize Board and served on Harvard University's Nieman Fellowship selection committee.
