Cardinal's Coverage of Madison Protests

You can read all the Cardinal's coverage of what's happening in Madison, and view the printed version of the Cardinal online, here.

Cardinal reporter Patrick Tricker assisted the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in its coverage:

We sent a Patrick Tricker, a reporter for the UW-Madison The Daily Cardinal, through the crowd the afternoon of Feb. 23, 2011. It was day two of the state Assembly’s marathon vote on Walker’s measure, which involved hundreds of Democratic amendments.

In an informal survey, Tricker spoke directly to 26 protesters in the Capitol rotunda. About a fourth of the 26 were from out of state, half from Madison and the remainder were from other parts of Wisconsin. He found one from California and one from Alaska.

Meet Today's Cardinal: Editor in Chief Emma Roller

Emma mug

Hometown: Glendale, Wis.

Dream Job: Editor of Flavorpill, Jezebel or a similar website.

Favorite spot on campus: Aside from the Cardinal office, the Terrace on a balmy summer night with friends, a deck of cards and a pitcher of Strongbow.

What's a typical day at the Cardinal for you?

Insanity. Enjoyable insanity. All I can really tell you is that I get to the office at 4 pm for news meeting and I usually stumble out sometime before 3 am. Anything that happens between those times is a fever dream of gut-wrenching panic, heated debate over serious and not-so-serious topics, and food swiped from the Copy desk. Sleep. Class. Repeat.

What do you hope to achieve with your work there?

Too many things. I want to make the Cardinal more approachable both to students and staffers. I want to help give the Cardinal the resources to keep a sense of continuity from year to year. I want to help my staff succeed and feel that they've made a difference on campus. I want to give a voice to students and issues that wouldn't otherwise have one. But most of all, I want to beat the f***ing Herald.

What do you want Cardinal alumni to know about your Cardinal staff?

We're a pretty close-knit bunch. We obviously work together, but we also study together, stress out together, joke around together, eat and drink together-sometimes a bit too much of the latter. Hence the saying, "The Herald's a job, the Cardinal's a family." The way I think about it, I have the rest of my life to work at a "normal" job. Working with people you truly care about, and who truly care about you, is a lot more rare.

What is the greatest rock and roll album of all time?

The Clash - London Calling
