Daily Cardinal Wins SPJ Awards
INDIANAPOLIS – The Society of Professional Journalists is pleased to announce the Region 6 Mark of Excellence Award winners for the 2010 calendar year. This year, the contest received almost 4,000 entries.
The honorees were awarded certificates on April 9 during the Region 6 SPJ Spring Conference held in Bloomington, Minn. First place regional winners will advance to the national round of judging. National winners will be announced in early May.
The Cardinal's winners were:
Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper
• Second Place: The Daily Cardinal, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Editorial Writing
• Third Place: The Daily Cardinal, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Feature Writing
• Second Place: The Daily Cardinal Features Entry – by Allison Dirr, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Sports Column Writing
• First Place: Nico Savidge, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
• Second Place: Ben Breiner, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Daily Cardinal Wins SPJ Awards
The Daily Cardinal has been awarded 12 Region Six Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Among the awards is a first-place win for Cardinal photographer Kyle Bursaw in the Sports Photography category, for his photo of UW basketball player Jon Leuer.
Cardinal staffers won awards for breaking news photography, editorial cartooning, in-depth reporting, general news reporting and sports column writing. The Cardinal also took second place in the best all-around daily paper contest.
