A recent reminder of what the Daily Cardinal was, and could be again

I was taken to one of my friend's workplaces recently. A fellow Cardinalista, he was named the advisor to the student newspaper of Ball State University. Looking around this newsroom, it drove the point home as to what we are trying to do for The Daily Cardinal.

This newsroom was 6 times the size of the Cardinal's; 6 times as many computers; and 6 times its budget from a place with less competition, far fewer students and far fewer alumni.

For those of you who have not had the chance, visit The Daily Cardinal and see what good we have done and yet to do. Student newspapers should be places to learn about reporting, editing, design and business not to only worry about money.

Let's look to make the nations sixth oldest student newspaper something worthy of its own legend. Look to see how you can help and remember that the legacy of the Cardinal is all of our concerns.

Finishing What You Start

For all of the kind words many of you have given us over the past five years, I cannot look on everything done to date and say we are done. I have not, and the DCAA has not, done everything we can for The Daily Cardinal, its staff and its alumni.

Many of the goals that we had set out -- mentoring, job posting, internship listings, increased alumni communications -- were all dependent upon having the means to do so cheaply and easily. The plan was to do these things over the internet, via our web site at http://www.dailycardinal. net.

Well, that was delayed. And delayed. And delayed again. As I have heard from many of you, I had "other things to do." It could no longer wait. By the time this newsletter reaches you, the new DCAA web site should be online and ready for use. I would invite you to register on this site and use it to provide ideas, job postings, talk, to build community.

It was difficult work, but it was necessary for a cause I believe in. I would encourage each of you to look into doing something similar for something you believe in; something for which you did not think you had the time.

Make the time. Do it today.
