Daily Cardinal Wins SPJ Awards
The Daily Cardinal has been awarded 12 Region Six Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Among the awards is a first-place win for Cardinal photographer Kyle Bursaw in the Sports Photography category, for his photo of UW basketball player Jon Leuer.
Cardinal staffers won awards for breaking news photography, editorial cartooning, in-depth reporting, general news reporting and sports column writing. The Cardinal also took second place in the best all-around daily paper contest.

Cardinal Alumnus Wins Second Pulitzer
Anthony Shadid wins for International Reporting:
For a distinguished example of reporting on international affairs, in print or online or both, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000).
Awarded to Anthony Shadid of The Washington Post for his rich, beautifully written series on Iraq as the United States departs and its people and leaders struggle to deal with the legacy of war and to shape the nation’s future.
Shadid served as the Cardinal's campus editor in 1989.
